The hypertensive dental patient
Article Abstract:
Patients with hypertension may need special dental care. Some antihypertensive drugs such as beta blockers may interact dangerously with anesthetics containing blood vessel constrictors. Antihypertensive drugs can also increase a patient's risk of developing cavities. Since stress can increase blood pressure, hypertensive patients may want to take a sedative before dental procedures. They should also be scheduled in the afternoon since blood pressure tends to be greatest in the morning. Patients with severe hypertension should not be treated until they see a physician.
