The Role of Transthoracic Echocardiography in the Diagnosis of Infective Endocarditis in Children
Article Abstract:
The use of two-dimensional transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) is a significant help for the diagnosis of infective endocarditis (IE), but its use and effectiveness depends on other diagnostic features which increase the likelihood of the child's ailment being IE. IE is a serious cause of death and illness in children, and its diagnosis is a challenge to pediatricians because its symptoms in children are highly variable and nonspecific. Even with the use of TTE, diagnosis of IE remains a clinical diagnosis based on history, physical examination, and persistently positive blood cultures.

Parent and adolescent perceived need for parental consent involving research with minors
Article Abstract:
Adolescents may be less likely than their parents to feel parental consent is necessary to participate in research. Researchers surveyed 100 adolescents and their parents about a minor's participation in medical surveys, interviews, blood tests, and other research projects. Most believed that young people could consent to research with minimal risk, but parents were more likely to want parental consent for investigations of sexual behavior and blood testing for HIV infection. Parental consent and adolescent privacy often conflict in research on young people.

A community outreach lead screening program using capillary blood collected on filter paper
Article Abstract:
The use of filter paper to collect fingerstick blood for a community program to screen for lead levels in the blood seems effective. The filter paper samples seem accurate and practical, giving highly accurate readings up to 15 micrograms/dL. At that point and higher, the accuracy is less than at levels below that, although there is no apparent reason why this should be. The samples were analyzed for lead content by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry.
