The adolescent with pelvic inflammatory disease: assessment and management
Article Abstract:
Sexually active teenage girls are at high risk for pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), and clinicians may need to employ special strategies to get them to comply with a treatment regimen. Lower abdominal and adnexal tenderness and cervical motion tenderness are indicative of PID, and may be accompanied by fever, high white blood cell count and purulent discharge. Diagnostic methods include cultures, laparoscopy and ultrasound. Teenage girls may require inpatient treatment, and a contract may increase compliance with therapy and follow-up. Education about prevention of recurrences is extremely important.
