The changing role of peri-operative nursing
Article Abstract:
Theatre nursing practice is changing, and the theatre nurse must be equipped to respond to the changes and to provide the best care for the patient. Changes in the UK include the increasing number of surgical interventions which are performed in environments other than the operating theatre, the growth of clinical knowledge, and the development of minimally invasive procedures. Nurses have new roles and new procedures in the peri-operative situation, and the National Association of Theatre Nurses is one of the professional bodies developing guidelines on non-medical staff roles.

Article Abstract:
A job exchange scheme has been set up at the Brighton Health Care National Health Service Trust, UK, to help develop better communication skills between nursing staff and their managers. Managers can take part in ward duties, which enable them to have a greater understanding of the pressures facing clinical staff. Nursing staff can shadow a director or manager for the day in an attempt to appreciate the importance of management within the health care service. There has been a favourable response from those who have participated in the scheme.
