The clinical significance of ultrasonographically detected subchorionic hemorrhages
Article Abstract:
Ultrasound findings of placental hemorrhages may indicate an increased risk of miscarriage, stillbirth, prematurely detaching placenta, and preterm labor. Researchers performed ultrasound examinations on 24,291 pregnant women, and found evidence of placental hemorrhage in 317, a rate of 1.3%. Placental hemorrhages were more likely to cause adverse outcomes than vaginal bleeding. Women with placental hemorrhages were more likely to have miscarriages, stillbirths, or newborn deaths than women with vaginal bleeding but no placental hemorrhage. Placental hemorrhage was associated with an increased risk of premature detachment of the placenta, and both of these conditions may indicate a defect in placental development. Larger placental hemorrhages were associated with more complications than smaller ones.

Intrauterine growth restriction with absent end-diastolic flow velocity in the umbilical artery is associated with maldevelopment of the placental terminal villous tree
Article Abstract:
Severe intrauterine growth retardation in combination with impeded fetal blood flow through the placenta may be caused by stunted development of placental capillaries. Researchers used electron microscopes to analyze placental blood vessel structure in tissue samples from 10 pregnancies with severe intrauterine growth retardation and impeded blood flow as measured by Doppler ultrasound. They compared results with samples taken from nine placentas from normal pregnancies. Capillaries from the growth-retarded pregnancies did not show the typical rich, convoluted networks of vessels seen in healthy placentas.
