Make the right noises caring for hearing-impaired patients
Article Abstract:
Hearing loss is distressing for hospital patients and can hamper effective nursing. Nurses need to have good communication skills and a survey looked into the problems faced by patients with significant hearing loss. Almost 18% had felt seriously disadvantaged in hospital due to their hearing loss and 47% felt that hospital staff lacked ability to communicate with hearing impaired patients. Nurses must first comprehend how those with hearing loss receive messages and develop practical ways of coping with varied situations that may arise.

Providing support and care through a hospital at home
Article Abstract:
A hospital-at-home project has been implemented by Kingston and District Community NHS Trust in the United Kingdom to provide a health-care service within which patients can retain some control and make informed choices. Patients who would normally be treated in hospital are provided with therapy and nursing care in their own homes. Patients hold onto their own records and are able to become involved in planning their package of care. Some nursing staff suffer increased stress because they are always on call, however.
