The levels of pain experienced with lower limb fractures
Article Abstract:
Pain management is a vital part of providing quality patient care, but a study of males with lower limb fractures in Coventry and Warwickshire Hospital suggests that pain management was given low priority. The 40 patients who took part in the study all rated their pain intensity as being 'a lot of pain or more' on movement. However, 80% of patients were admitted to the ward without having analgesic medication prescribed or administered. Early pain relief is important to help patients be able to move or lift and so avoid pressure sores. Pain management should start in the A&E department.

Using traction
Article Abstract:
The use of Hamilton-Russell traction should be limited to patients who have had hip fracture treatment delayed for some reason. A study into the occurrence of bed sores found Hamilton-Russell traction did not increase the chance of bed sore formation and traction could actually help pain management. Hamilton-Russell traction is used to align fractured bones by use of force to maintain a fixed position. The system was invented by Robert Hamilton Russell in 1924.
