The managed care factor in antibiotic resistance
Article Abstract:
The focus of health maintenance organizations (HMOs) on lowering costs contributes to increased bacterial resistance to antibiotics. Medical staff at HMOs are expected to increase patient satisfaction while spending less time in explanations for treatment. Therefore, patients who expect antibiotics for such non-life-threatening conditions as colds are often given these drugs. Misuse of antibiotics is not cost-effective, lowers the quality of medical care, and creates cynical providers.

Is it really managed, and is it really care?
Article Abstract:
Managed care has been criticized, characterized as caring solely about costs, and for some this may be true, but this is changing for the better. The criteria for measuring levels of health care have become more comprehensive, improving quality assurances. The judgment of clinicians and the well-being of patients are returning to the center of decisions. The system of managed care is young, many of the early mistakes are being reviewed and changes are being made.
