The obstetrician-gynecologist's role in the practical management of polycystic ovary syndrome
Article Abstract:
The treatment of polycystic ovary syndrome may vary depending on whether the woman has glucose intolerance. Polycystic ovary syndrome is primarily characterized by lack of regular ovulation and excess male hormones. However, many women are also obese and have insulin resistance, an early sign of diabetes. Drugs to prevent diabetes would be best for women whose insulin resistance is the overriding feature. Weight loss and exercise may also be beneficial. This is important because insulin resistance is also a risk factor for heart disease. Oral contraceptives and female hormones can be used to treat the reproductive disorders.

Polycystic ovary syndrome: current and future treatment paradigms
Article Abstract:
Treatments that focus on the metabolic abnormalities underlying polycystic ovary syndrome may be as beneficial as fertility treatments. Polycystic ovary syndrome is primarily characterized by lack of regular ovulation and high levels of male hormones. However, many women with the condition are also obese and 40% have glucose intolerance, which is a precursor of diabetes. Weight loss, diet, and drug treatment for obesity and diabetes may improve some of the metabolic abnormalities in these women.

Ovarian interstitial YAG-laser: An effective new method to manage anovulation in women with polycystic ovary syndrome
Article Abstract:
The effectiveness of transvaginal ultrasound-guided ovarian interstitial laser-coagulation treatment in anovulatory women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is assessed. The results have shown the ultrasound-guided transvaginal ovarian interstitial laser treatment might be an effective new method to manage anovulation in PCOS patients.
