The quality of nursing
Article Abstract:
Quality assurance in nursing could be ensured by modification of quality types in the National Health Service as defined by Pollitt. Medical quality, defined as the technical quality of doctors, and non-medical service quality, referring to the quality of interpersonal relations of nurses and others, should be merged. Experienced quality, as experienced by patients, should be extended, so that users can contribute to improving nurses' comprehension of quality. The concept of total quality management (TQM), which involves creating quality in all aspects of an organisation, is also discussed.

Research, audit and networking: who's in the lead?
Article Abstract:
Researchers investigated the research, audit and networking activity undertaken by the 30 UK nursing development units (NDUs). The government set up these units in 1991, giving them extra funding so they could undertake nursing research. The investigation revealed that NDUs do undertake significantly more research than other comparable nursing units. They are also more involved in networking, indicating their usage as a resource centre. NDUs undertake around the same number of audits as comparable units, but they tend to focus more on audits related to the evaluation of nursing.

Applying triangulation to the assessment of quality of nursing
Article Abstract:
Research shows that some of the techniques currently used to assess the quality of nursing care have their limitations. Greater knowledge of what quality of nursing care actually involves is needed if the claim that this can be objectively assessed using generic quality assessment instruments is to be verified. A multiple triangle research strategy is proposed for assessing the quality of nursing care and for subsequent use in validating generic quality assessment instruments.
