The road less travelled
Article Abstract:
Travellers and gypsies are often discouraged from seeking medical help because of the prejudice they encounter from medical staff and health service professionals. Medical problems facing gypsies stem from poor diet, inadequate standard of living and genetic and mental problems through inbreeding. Gypsies can often settle in one place but a fear of outside assistance leads to reliance on traditional methods that are not always safe. The lifestyle of travellers means that they are not in one place long enough to register with a GP and gain access to health care.

French connection
Article Abstract:
The Hertford British Hospital in Paris, France, is managed by a team of British ex-patriots and staffed by a mix of French and British nurses. French nurses do not put the same emphasis on patient care and are more interested in procedures, whereas the British nurses like to spend time with their patients. Nurses also do not get involved in making decisions in France. Many British nurses respond to job vacancies in the Hertford British Hospital and are recruited for six month periods and are provided with accommodation.

A special legacy of neglect
Article Abstract:
Carole Rigby spent three years in Broadmoor Special Hospital after starting a fire in her office at work. It was a cry for help rather than a malicious act, and the stigma of having been in a mental hospital has had a serious effect on her life. Ms Rigby trained and worked as a nurse after being released, but when the media uncovered her background she was forced to leave her nursing job. She now works as a project worker with women in special hospitals and campaigns for better treatment of such women.
