Article Abstract:
The case of a 51-year-old woman is discussed who initially was hospitalized for shortness of breath that became progressively worse and worse. She was found to be anemic and a chest X-ray and CT scan showed a mass in her upper chest in an area called the mediastinum. She was ultimately diagnosed with a tumor called a thymoma and also with pure red-cell aplasia.

A case of a 38-year-old woman who was presented to the emergency room for evaluation of shortness of breath and jaundice is presented. Two important concepts such as inactivation of the X chromosome and activity of the G6PD enzyme are important in understanding how such severe hemolysis developed in the patient.
