The spin on nurses' hard work
Article Abstract:
UK government ministers have been trying to take the credit for good practice developed by health professionals and their managers since the early 1990s. Health Secretary Alan Milburn has presented the idea of nurses administering chemotherapy as his own, but a number of nurses have been doing this in specialist centres for a long time. Similarly, Prime Minister Tony Blair has presented ideas for reforming casualty care as if they had come from the government itself. Problems such as shortages of nurses in accident and emergency units may hamper the implementation of many ideas for improving standards of medical care.

Brown urged not to stage pay award
Article Abstract:
It is possible that the UK National Health Service (NHS) will lose more nurses if Chancellor Gordon Brown decides that the nurses' pay award must be staged, according to the RCN. There is now a very serious recruitment crisis in nursing, with staff turnover at 21% and the NHS lacking 8,000 full-time nurses. There was a shortfall of 500 in applications for the 16,100 nursing education places available in 1997. Nursing unions believe that nurses' morale will be very badly affected if the pay award is staged.

Unions warn of threat to theatre staff
Article Abstract:
A move away from Whitley Council terms and conditions by Royal Hospitals National Health Service Trust in east London, England, will include the abolition of London weighting and other special additional payments to theatre nurses. The trust plans to replace these with a payment which will be included in basic salary as part of standard terms and conditions for all theatre employees. The Royal College of Nursing has objected to the plans, which it claims could lead to some nurses receiving almost 1,000 pounds sterling less each year.
