Unsafe sexual behavior and alcohol use at the event level: results of a national survey
Article Abstract:
Alcohol use appears to have an indirect effect on risky sexual practices and is one of many factors that influence sexual behavior. It has been hypothesized that because alcohol impairs judgment, its use may increase the practice of high-risk sexual behaviors. Previous studies linking alcohol use and unsafe sex support this theory. A survey of 2,058 adults found that alcohol use was associated with sexual intercourse involving new partners and casual partners. Alcohol use was not related to use of birth control or condom use. Overall, condom use was related to general drinking habits, not to the amount drunk at the time of intercourse. Heavy drinkers were less likely to use condoms. Among men, condom use was highest among those with conservative sexual attitudes, those who were less inclined to take risks or act impulsively, those with many sexual partners and those with higher sensation-seeking tendencies. Younger women and women with higher levels of education were more likely to use condoms.

Rehabilitattion from substance abuse in individuals with a history of sexual abuse
Article Abstract:
The effect of sexual abuse history on rehabilitation of individuals who abuse substances was analyzed from 20 randomly selected subjects in a rehabilitation facility. Those who dealt wih issues of sexual abuse showed a higher relatively success across categories of treatment. Regression and slower recovery were observed from drug users who have not dealt with their sexual abuse history. Thus, sexual abuse history must be obtained and addressed as part of substance abuse rehabiliation programs.
