Vaccine failure or failure to vaccinate?
Article Abstract:
It is not clear that the 1995 outbreak of measles in Hiakhar, Senegal, was the result of a decline in vaccine-induced immunity. A Multidose vaccination plan is not justified in developing countries. It appears that low vaccination coverage when the first dose was given was responsible for the outbreak. The vaccine efficacy would have been lower in older age groups if waning immunity had been a major factor in measles susceptibility. Although safe and effective measles vaccines have been available since 1963, measles in 1999 accounts for about 10% of mortality in the world from all causes in children under 5 years of age.

Three more strikes against tobacco
Article Abstract:
The American Medical Association and leading anti-smoking groups sponsored a conference on ways to limit the use of tobacco in the United States. Several workshops issued recommendations including higher federal excise taxes on cigarettes plus rules against smoking in the workplace, restaurants, and other public places. Doctors and other opponents of smoking must counter the tobacco industry's marketing and lobbying efforts.
