Vaginal laceration following a jet-ski accident
Article Abstract:
Water sports performed at high speeds, such as water skiing or jet-skiing, can result in serious injuries. Fractures, cuts and bruises are common in these types of sports. The severity of the injury is generally related to the speed and force of impact on hitting the water. Falling into the water while traveling at high speeds causes water to be forced into body cavities such as the ears, nose, mouth, rectum and vagina, which can cause serious damage. Vaginal injuries are not uncommon in women who engage in water skiing or use jet-skis, and vaginal tears are the most common form of vaginal injury. They cause vaginal bleeding in 80 percent of the cases and pain in 10 percent of the cases. In severe cases, the water may force its way through the vagina into the abdomen. This article describes a jet-ski accident that resulted in a vaginal laceration. Jet-skis have a ''dead-man'' switch that turns the engine off if the ridder looses control or falls off the jet-ski. But in the case described here, the woman was riding as a passenger on the back of a jet-ski. The motor remained on while the woman fell behind the jet-ski and the jet nozzle forced water into the vagina. The force of the water was so great that it tore its way through the vagina into the abdominal cavity. The woman had vaginal bleeding and she went to the emergency room. Surgery was performed to repair the tear and antibiotics were given to prevent an infection. Four days after surgery the woman was discharged from the hospital. Six weeks later, the vaginal laceration was completely healed. (Consumer Summary produced by Reliance Medical Information, Inc.)

Defeating deafness
Article Abstract:
Some eight and a half million people in the United Kingdom suffer from some type of hearing loss, yet it remains mostly unacknowledged by the general public. The charity Hearing Research Trust has changed its name to Defeating Deafness in the hope of gaining greater publicity and financial aid. The organisers hope to encourage famous people who suffer from a hearing loss to talk about their problem in the hope of publicizing the extent of deafness in the community. Any money raised from the publicity drive will go to support new research .
