GAPS (AMA Guidelines for Adolescent Preventive Service): where are the gaps?
Article Abstract:
The AMA Guidelines for Adolescent Preventive Services (GAPS) represent an important advance in providing recommendations in adolescent preventive health care, but the document itself has gaps. Some recommendations, such as the complete physical, require further definition and study of their cost-effectiveness. Others, such as counseling recommendations, would benefit from explicit description and evaluation of practicality. The exclusion of other important issues such as dental disease prevention and screening for abnormally painful menstruation should be justified.

Prevalence and features of joint hypermobility among adolescent athletes
Article Abstract:
Adolescent athletes seem to have the same incidence of hypermobility in their joints as nonathletes. It was previously believed that youth with hypermobile joints avoided athletic activity. A total of 264 athletes, 150 male and 114 female, were examined for range of motion of fingers, thumbs, elbows, knees and waist, and 34 or 12.9% showed hypermobility. Of these, 25 were female and 9 male. More studies may confirm if hypermobile youths can enjoy the benefits of strenuous exercise and still be protected from risk.
