Widdecombe fair or foul?
Article Abstract:
Newly-appointed UK Shadow Health Secretary Ann Widdecombe has a colourful political past. She earned public disapproval when she supported the practice of shackling female prisoners during childbirth. However, she confirmed her reputation as a politician with a conscience when she spoke out against the actions of her former immediate superior and thus spoilt his chances in the party leadership election. Widdecombe is adamantly opposed to abortion and stresses the importance of viewing issues in a moral context.

A shot in the arm for public health
Article Abstract:
UK nurses can play a vital role in ensuring that people from vulnerable groups are vaccinated against influenza, according to Gillian Stephens, the country's assistant chief nursing officer. Being vaccinated against influenza is particularly important for people in care institutions, who are twice as likely to die from influenza than the average person. However, those with renal failure, chronic respiratory disease, suppressed immune systems, heart disease or diabetes mellitus are also at risk.

Children of hope
Article Abstract:
Civil conflict in Northern Ireland has had a direct impact on mental health, according to nurses there. Many people have been afraid to venture any distance outside their local community, and some have been the victims of extreme violence. Nurses are particularly keen to see a reduction in the impact of civil conflict in Northern Ireland on children and teenagers. They seek to make children optimistic about the future, and are encouraging them to challenge traditional stereotypes and beliefs.
