The life and work of John A. Thain in the wake of his appointment as the chief executive officer (CEO) of the New York Telephone Exchange after a tumultuous year of scandal and investigation at the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) is discussed. Thain, a financial wizard, typically described as a precise and dispassionate technocrat, specializes in cutting costs and managing capital and was appointed, to restore investor confidence, in the NYSE and thereby quieten the critics.
