Robert B. Hollander, Translator and Dante scholar
Article Abstract:
Robert Hollander, an internationally renowned Dante scholar, gained celebrity status in literary circles outside academia in 2000, with the appearance of his translation into contemporary English of Dante's 'Inferno', the first part of the immortal, three-part, 14,233-line poem 'Commedia', written in vernacular Italian. Hollander was the originator of and prime mover in the launch of an ambitious project in which huge amounts of material related to Dante were gathered into two databases and made available on the Internet for use in teaching and research.
