A tougher approach to health and safety
Article Abstract:
All European Community (EC) states must implement new legislation on health and safety at work by Dec 31, 1992. The Single European Act introduced article 118a to the European Economic Community (EEC) treaty. Article 118a provides for directives for improvements in the health and safety of workers. Specific directives relating to the workplace, work equipment, personal protective equipment, display screen equipment, and heavy loads have been adopted. A health and safety agency will be set up to offer support to the EC for implementing the directives. Some additional new UK regulations will be needed to cover directives which are not covered by the UK Health and Safety at Work Act.

The facts of working life
Article Abstract:
The European Commission's 1989 report on employment indicated that most of the European Community (EC) was experiencing favorable economic conditions. The EC's 60% employment/population ratio was lower than the ratios in the US, Japan, and the rest of Europe. The largest employment growth occurred in the service industries. Average wage increases were 65%, but labor productivity growth was diminishing. Some 44% of all women were in the work force, and women accounted for 38% of the total work force in the EC. Most of the EC was experiencing economic growth, an increase in new jobs, and low inflation.

Job prospects remain grim
Article Abstract:
The 1991 report of the European Commission on employment in Europe is now available. The report covers three areas: employment prospects, employment issues, and employment policies. Although the service sector and the manufacturing industry reported significant job growth, unemployment remains to be Europe's biggest problems. The report also revealed regional economic disparities to be serious concern for the region.
