Article Abstract:
Unemployment in the UK continued to fall in 1997, with average pre-tax earnings, for full-time workers, increasing by 4.6% compared to 2.4% in prices. The newly elected Labour Party introduced the 3.5 billion pounds sterling Welfare to Work project in 1997. The government plans to introduce a minimum wage despite objections from business. The government has pledged to freely allow union membership. The unions are faced with falling numbers but studies show many people would be willing to be represented by a union. The unions contributed 12.5 million pounds sterling to the Labour Party.

Trade unions, political fund ballots and the Labour Party
Article Abstract:
The United Kingdom Labour Party will probably maintain a strained relationship with the trade unions, with unions unable to retain a direct association with the party despite having the right to conduct political campaigns. Union members voted for the continuance of the right to campaign while being unconnected with the Labour Party, which Labour perceives as being more acceptable to the electorate. Unions were highly successful in the political fund ballots, with unions required by law to ballot members on political funding. The results of the 1994/96 voting are examined.

Managing the employment relationship on greenfield sites in Australia and New Zealand
Article Abstract:
It is not necessary for all companies setting up greenfield sites to adopt a new human resource philosophy or shift away from their existing approaches to managing employee relations, according to research among companies operating on greenfield sites in Australia and New Zealand. Companies tend to try to replicate successful greenfield philosophies that are regarded as both resilient and universal. However, it can prove hard to sustain such philosophies over a long period. Managers should not be expected to design and sustain an unchangeable form of employee relations.
