Avoid negligent hiring: are you well armed to screen applicants?
Article Abstract:
Companies should learn how to properly screen applicants. Proper screening reveals if applicants exaggerate their educational or professional achievements, fill in employment gaps, conceal undesirable work behaviors and hide their criminal records. Conducting screening procedures minimizes the risk of crime and violence in the workplace, reduces turnover rate, avoids costly lawsuits, and prevents sexual harassment cases. Unfortunately, many human resources professionals are hampered by the fact that it is hard to gather background information and that laws and restrictions have made screening more difficult. However, there is a way for human resources professionals to conduct screening effectively. They can use such tools as the Social Security trace, motor-vehicle records check, education check, credit history, and criminal conviction and court records. They can also rely on personality tests, psychological tests and face-to-face interviews.

Using internal web sites to automate HR
Article Abstract:
An increasing number of companies are using internal web sites to improve their operations and reduce costs. Like its counterpart, the World Wide Web, this technology provides access to a wide variety of information. In addition, it enables employees to complete forms and change records with minimal or zero human assistance. However, unlike the World Wide Web, internal web sites cannot be accessed by people or computers outside the company's network. Webs have several advantages over networks. Networks are difficult to use because people do not know where to locate the information that they need. In comparison, a web has a central place where the location of all the information available is indicated. The HR department can greatly benefit from the use of the internal web. Among the information they can include in web sites are HR directory, management guidelines, employee handbook, traning manuals, HR documents, and benefits documentation.

All the comforts of home
Article Abstract:
Telecommuting enables employees to save time, money and energy and to achieve a better balance between their work and personal lives. New York-based Link Resources reports that 7.6 million Americans are already telecommuting and millions more are working in virtual offices away from home, such as their cars, hotels and satellite work areas. The success of telecommuting depends in part to the effective use of the right technology. Employees will not be obtain any significant savings if they are using outdated equipment and ineffecient work practices. What they need is technology that facilitates the smooth flow of data between the central office and the home office. To create this seamless connection, would-be telecommuters should purchase a computer, a telephone andthe necessary peripherals with the right level of compatibility.
