Household invests in training
Article Abstract:
Household Bank has developed and implemented an effective and successful branch manager training and development program designed to enrich the careers of its employees and strengthen the future of the institution. The program is divided into two parts: bank business development, focusing on the skills and knowledge used in the banking industry, plus technical knowledge necessary for branch operations; and bank management development, focusing on management skills, presentation skills, and business skills that support branches. Trainees unable to finish the program can re-enroll at a later date if they have strengthened the skill that hindered their previous success, or they demonstrate a renewed commitment to a branch management career. Managers completing Household's training program manage more effectively than those receiving only on-the-job training or external training.

Expert training that's free
Article Abstract:
The research and engineering department of General Dynamics' Convair Div (San Diego, CA) implemented a successful after-hours voluntary training program for technical and management employees in 1988. The objectives of the program included identifying essential training issues, providing comprehensive training, and ensuring the evaluation of performance-based skills. The Strengthening Our Engineering Leaders training program involved eight steps: the evaluation of enrollment and design requirements, the evaluation and prioritization of survey results, the design of the curriculum, the selection of instructors, the selection of participants, the provision of training, the evaluation of effectiveness, and the celebration of success. Convair was able to improve employee performance and morale at a cost savings of $2.5 million as of 1991.

Rockwell's approach to improving quality
Article Abstract:
Rockwell International Corp's semiconductor products division (SPD) emphasizes a strong customer orientation in its management philosophy. The SPD tries to consider the perspectives of vendors, customers, and employees through good communication, and a mutual commitment to quality and mutual problem-solving activity. A survey conducted for SPD by National Information Systems revealed that item, price, and product availability were the top three of eight items important to customers. The company also established a customer-centered lobby in its facilities, set up customer action teams, hosted a vendor symposium, and created a program to foster employee pride and quality commitment.
