Some companies that are visiting college campuses to recruit the best graduates are finding out to their dismay that students do not even know they existed. This is an unfortunate development because the lack of accurate and complete information about the recruiting companies disable applicants from making wise career decisions. Ultimately, the companies themselves suffer from high turnover rates among college hires. To address this concern, a number of companies are taking action and improving their image along the way. Ingersoll-Rand and Swiss Bank conducted a study on student perceptions about them and released messages correcting misperceptions and stressing its strengths. Ingersoll-Rand and Andersen Consulting rely on internships to develop a positive image among students while Metalcraft recruits students for part-time help. Gemini Consulting, on the other hand, invites clients for its campus presentations.

Creative staffing drives success

Many companies are discovering that recruitment of employees has become quite a daunting task. Conventional staffing sources that were once effective in luring the best hires are now becoming obsolete in the new business environment. Three companies are addressing this challenge through creative staffing approaches. For instance, Netscape is hiring individuals they are not supposed to employ at all. It has standing offers to hackers who entered its system and discovered a software implementation error. Max Daetwyler Corp., on the other hand, has another approach. After discovering that machinists are in short supply, it simply partnered with two other firms and conducted apprenticeship workshops for students near its location to develop the necessary skilled labor it needs. Finally, the Opryland Hotel looked in a distant place, Puerto Rico to be exact, for employees it needs for its expansion effort.

The latest recruitment technique involves online technology. Human resources professionals simply have to post their openings on the Internet and wait for resumes of applicants to arrive through the electronic mail system. To ensure the success of such a recruitment approach, there are six steps that should be followed. The first of these requires recruiters to familiarize themselves with the Internet. They should learn the basics by attending classes and experimenting with the Internet. The second step involves market research to find out the recruitment services available on the Internet. Then, recruiters should define their target audience, determine their search needs and compare costs. Finally, they should not stop experimenting with the Internet because it is always evolving.
