Carrying out a COSHH assessment
Article Abstract:
The UK Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 1988 (COSHH) placed a responsibility on employers to perform appropriate assessments. These must indicate any requirements for control techniques or medical and health inspections, and also must put in place any necessary information, instruction, training and keeping of records. The first step is to collect information on the substances used on the premises and the second to identify hazards associated with these compounds. Routes for problems to occur are then identified and dealt with.

COSHH essentials
Article Abstract:
The Essentials method developed by the UK Health & Safety Executive is designed to assist companies in complying with Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) regulations. This method brings together simple classifications of hazard and exposure to indicate one of a number of broad approaches to control. It has been developed mainly to assist users of chemicals with responsibilities under COSHH, but it is also aimed at others in the health and safety system, particularly chemical suppliers.

Policy on dangerous substances
Article Abstract:
It has been estimated that 1,400 people die each year of cancer in the Netherlands, due to exposure to carcinogenic substances in the workplace. Many companies do not have effective control due to lack of expertise and information. The Dutch Cancer Society (KWF) drew attention to the subject and the Association of Comprehensive Cancer Centres (VvIK) and the Dutch Institute of the Working Environment (NIA) developed a policy on dangerous substances.
