Article Abstract:
A training and development program designed to teach a new leadership style to senior managers called 'Excellence Through People' was successfully tested at the W H Smith and Sons (Holdings) PLC. The important aspects of the leadership style taught by the program include the ability to present an inspirational vision to others, develop their intelligence and initiative, and become a leader. The program consisted of two workshops separated by a three-month break. The objectives of the first workshop included developing trust, establishing a vision, and developing an understanding of the changing business environment. The second workshop permitted program participants to review the vision and strategies created in the first workshop.

Improving assessment centres
Article Abstract:
Assessment centers provide an effective and comprehensive method of evaluating employees' potential and their development needs than conventional techniques, but organizations should be aware of the problems related to assessment centers. These problems include poorly designed exercises that are unrelated to the skills being evaluated, poorly designed procedures for integrating results from exercises and psychometric tests, and poorly trained evaluators. Training programs for evaluators should include exercises covering the primary stages of evaluation, videotapes of the exercises, and a discussion of the principles of providing feedback.
