Change and the personnel profession
Article Abstract:
Great Britain's Institute of Personnel Management has been in existence for 75 years. This anniversary provides the opportunity to reevaluate the Institute's policies in light of the changes that are occurring in British society and business. The Institute's membership requirements should be modified to account for the greater diversity and specialization in personnel management in the UK. Collective bargaining and relations with trade unions are becoming less important at UK companies. More personnel managers are becoming involved in non-traditional areas such as pension management, training, and counseling. The Institute should also strive for greater effect on public opinion and to build information networks among personnel managers.

I'm in personnel
Article Abstract:
Allied Dunbar Director of Sales Keith Carby feels his background in personnel work has helped him in his current position as trainer of sales personnel for his financial services employer. Dunbar's training program is rigorous because Dunbar sales representatives must come across as financial advisors rather than traditional salespeople. Since a lot of money is spent on trainees, they are very carefully screened. Dunbar has a 95% retention rate.
