Common patterns of behavior and communication in corporate mergers and acquisitions
Article Abstract:
The quickening pace of corporate mergers is exposing the weaknesses in current human relations techniques for change management. This examination of three case studies related to corporate acquisitions and mergers indicates that successful change management depends on effective communication. Behavior and communication patterns in corporate reorganizations occasioned by merger activities are investigated through surveys of 21 acquired company managers with follow-up interviews. Common patterns of management communication and employee behavior in response to such communication (or the lack thereof) are described. It is determined that if there is inadequate communication problems result in the areas of employee motivation, productivity, rumors, commitment, and turnover.

"Please don't make me a hero": a re-examination of corporate heroes
Article Abstract:
The creation of corporate heroes requires some amount of caution. While many management experts encourage the practice as a means of highlighting the accomplishment of corporate goals, there are some problems associated with corporate hero creation. Frequently, attempts to recognize individual accomplishment backfire, particularly when they are done out of context with the corporate culture. This is often the case in group-oriented organizations in which hero creation is more likely to breed resentment rather than admiration. A better way of infusing organizations with the benefits of motivation derived from having corporate heroes would be to create a strong foundation of corporate values that could serve as a benchmark for employee accomplishment.
