Edubusiness comes to the academy: the virtual university and the threat to academic labor
Article Abstract:
This article evaluates the potential effects of distance education and virtual universities on traditional universities and colleges. The authors assert that distance education is driven by proprietary corporations and that this model of virtual teaching and learning is threatening tradition academic labor relations by: encouraging managerial control over teaching; the hiring of part-time teachers without benefits; the breaking down of academic skills by reducing teaching to course development, delivery and grading outside of any larger context; and finally the development of a lucrative market for educational software.
