Research paves the way for asthma claims
Article Abstract:
Research carried out in the UK on asthma shows that all employees could have the condition triggered by working conditions, not just those who are especially vulnerable through allergies or smoking. The research was backed by the National Asthma Campaign and the Health and Safety Executive. The conclusions mean that employees suffering asthma are more likely to win a case involving claims that asthma was triggered by factors in their working environment.

Fatal fall tanker refuelling system had no handrails
Article Abstract:
Charringtons, a UK fuel distribution firm has been fined over lack of a safety system at work after a fatal accident. The company was fined 16,500 pounds sterling after pleading guilty to the offense. An employee fell from a tanker which had no handrails, and died after complications. The company had been told to fit handrails after a similar accident. Operators tend not to buy tankers with handrails since their old equipment then appears not to be safe.

Head to toe protection
Article Abstract:
Personal protective equipment (PPE) regulations advise any employer or self-employed person to assess whether the proposed PPE is suitable prior to selection. Adequate training and information should be provided on the equipment, and steps should be taken to make sure that it is properly used. Employees cannot be charged for PPE which is used exclusively at work.
