Global standardisation of PPE performance
Article Abstract:
There is a need for global standardization of PPE certification procedures and performance standards, and pressure to achieve this is likely to grow as the industry consolidates and becomes more international. There are a number of benefits from a harmonized market for PPE products, such as increased innovation and product availability. Certification procedures include JIS for Japan, and NIOSH for the US. Respirator gas canisters may be acceptable for US standards and overspecified for Japan. Eye protectors designed for the European market may not meet US standards.

Why have so many died?
Article Abstract:
Asbestos has been recognized as a hazard for a long time, yet there have been avoidable deaths due to asbestos exposure. Damages are set in Britain, and have not been increased, despute recommendations from the Law Commission. The law has not provided enough protection, and deaths are likely to continue. There may be lessons to be learnt from the US. The issue of levels of damages is political, and there is support from the public for tougher laws.
