How people are recognized is crucial
Article Abstract:
Corporate suggestion programs must provide an appropriate reward and recognition system to motivate and maintain personnel participation. Suggested rewards may be in cash or kind, with monetary rewards best applied to programs with large financial results. Imaginative rewards provide a perceived value greater than the actual cost of the reward but result in increased program acceptability. A employee suggestion program must be properly managed and promoted to improve its visibility and increase corporate participation. Some techniques include the use of catch program names, a formal program launching, the development of program rules and support groups and constant program evaluation and management. It is important that awards be appropriate to the desired goals and target personnel.

HR balancing: alternative downsizing
Article Abstract:
Hewlett-Packard Co used a human resources-balancing effort to undertake downsizing procedures for more than 400 employees at its Loveland, CO, division. This active resources-balancing effort provided alternative procedures for the surplus employees through a variety of both short- and long-term programs. The regional distribution program and the voluntary termination program, through either the Enhanced Early Retirement or the Voluntary Service Incentive package, made the majority of the placements. The other optional programs were the relocation program, loan program, reclassification program and employee draft program.
