IIP status - is it a wise investment?
Article Abstract:
Frizzell Financial Services successfully achieved Investors in People (IIP) status at little cost and in a short time of just five months. With the help of training manager Tony Miller, personnel manager David Tomlinson and CEO Hamish McKay developed two major training procedures that would help managers and supervisors pass national management board examinations. Each program involves solving existing work-related problems and application of the proposed solution, thereby, simultaneously training managers and supervisors while improving business efficiency. This program meets the criteria in considering qualification for IIP status which entails the development of employees to fulfill business goals. Aside from free publicity, Frizzell's pursuit of IIP status has resulted to the linkage of training programs to company strategy. This move has improved training efficiency which means that only training programs that would improve business are approved.

The road to development
Article Abstract:
British firm Transportation Planning Assoc (TPA) has embarked on a continuous professional development program headed by its staff development manager Nigel Lloyd. Lloyd has also introduced a new management development program, helped the company qualify for an Investors in People registration and adopted the Institute of Civil Engineers's new graduate training scheme. In addition, the staff development manager conducts a development appraisal of all employees who are also compelled to undergo annual performance evaluations by their own supervisors. TPA's training initiatives are contributing to the firm's efforts to keep ahead of the competition. The training drive has helped the organization raise its profile, attract new graduates, improve staff retention and enhance organizational communication.

Annual hours: a year of living dangerously
Article Abstract:
The use of flexible annualized hours arrangements does not always lead to harmonious labour relations. An evaluation of its impact on three organizations illustrates this observation. The system has proven unpopular at Independent Television Network Ltd (ITN) where most employees follow unpredictable schedules. Staff morale has been disrupted and ITN unions are trying to negotiate a way out of the system. Strathkelvin District Council has met a similar response. The unions are critical of the system and have raised questions on the unreasonableness of work hours. Workers at Express Foods Ltd, however, have adopted the scheme enthusiastically. It is observed that the system is best for organizations with relatively regular work.
