If you want your ideas approved
Article Abstract:
Managers trying to convince others to accept their ideas often find that being correct is not enough. To convince others to adopt ideas about productivity improvements or procedural changes, the manager should concentrate on image, human relations and persuasive techniques. The manager whose image reflects fairness and honesty is more likely to have ideas accepted than is the manager with a manipulative and untrustworthy image. Human relations techniques to use when trying to influence others center on: listening to other people, avoiding using words with bad connotative meanings when communicating ideas, sharing information openly, displaying trust in those whom the manager wishes to influence, recognizing shades of differences among the views of others, and keeping an open mind to suggestions. Five steps in persuading others to accept ideas are also detailed and explained with a hypothetical example.

Work sampling: increasing service and white collar productivity
Article Abstract:
Work sampling is a technique for measuring white collar and service employees' productivity. The technique involves: dividing the work day into 480 one-minute periods; using random sample tables to identify periods for checking on the work of subordinates; and calculating the number of sample reviews that must be conducted to get an accurate measurement of production. A formula and a table are provided for identifying the number of samples needed to achieve 95 percent accuracy. Prior to undertaking a work sampling program the supervisor should: (1) identify a group's work methods and work objectives; (2) explain work sampling to the group that will be studied; (3) determine the number of samples needed, based upon a desired accuracy level; (4) train others in work sampling to facilitate the sampling process; and (5) identify the random time for each sample review.

Getting employee commitment
Article Abstract:
Obtaining employee commitment is key to quality and productivity improvements. Employees need to feel that they have a personal stake in the company's success, a sense of ownership. The Wal-Mart discount store chain obtains employee support by maintaining strong ties between senior management and other personnel, and by openly sharing information with workers. Harte-Hanks Communication's KYTV television station posts minutes of all managers' meeting for all employees. Litton's Advanced Circuitry Division uses informal monthly 'coffee' get-togethers in which groups of plant personnel meet with the general manager to discuss employee concerns.
