Lightening the load: ergonomics practicalities of manual handling
Article Abstract:
Proposed UK regulations for the manual handling of loads are seen as a good step forward towards reducing occupational injuries. The main thrust of the regulations is to get employers to take an ergonomic approach to manual handling. Training of employees, although laudable, is on its own inadequate and it does not make a hazardous operation safe. Handling tasks need to be sensibly identified and described and, when they are, ways of avoiding having to move the load at all often become apparent. Organisational, design and layout changes can frequently improve both safety and productivity.

A fresh look at cleaning at work
Article Abstract:
There are many chemicals used in cleaning buildings, outside and inside, that can present hazards in many ways especially when incompatible compounds are mixed. For example bleach and ammonia are both used as separate cleaning agents in washrooms and toilets but if they are mixed they can produce phosgene gas that could prove fatal if inhaled. Various changes can be made to cleaning procedures such as substitution or elimination of chemicals, isolation, and employment of protective equipment and clothing. Training in all these aspects and others are highly desirable.
