Personnel Manager of the Year

Personnel Management magazine is launching a new award program that aims to recognize exceptional individual achievement among human resource (HR) professionals. The magazine intends to make this new 'Personnel Manager of the Year' award an annual exercise to help encourage innovation and excellence among HR professionals. Nominations for the award should be submitted to the magazine no later than Aug 18, 1992. All nominations should include relevant personal information about the nominee, a detailed explanation of the reasons for the nomination, the nature of the relationship between the person making the nomination and the nominee, and a signed statement from the nominee affirming consent to the nomination. The award, which is sponsored by BT and the Forte Group, offers a 1,000 pounds sterling cash prize and an expense-paid stay for two at any Forte hotel in the UK.

'PM Expert' 1991: the winning entries
Article Abstract:
Personnel Management magazine's 1991 'PM Expert' competition asked readers to submit a manifesto for governmental action on an employment-related issue. Twenty participating readers were then selected as finalists and asked to take a written quiz on personnel management issues. John Harris of Dudley Metropolitan Borough Council won the first prize on the strength of a manifesto that dealt with proposals to halt the loss to businesses of the skills of retirement-age workers. The second prize went to Paul Cuerden of Sandwell Training and Enterprise Council, while the third prize was awarded to Simon Luckett of Sheffield University. The winners were given cash prizes and vouchers to courses organized by the Institute of Personnel Management.

The Institute of Personnel Management and the National Economic Development Office jointly conducted a study to investigated the have been happening to pay systems both in the public and in the public sector. The results show the piece-rate scheme to be losing popularity in the private sector where such a pay structure is seen as unfair and discourages 'right first time' attitudes, while remaining widespread in the public sector. Other reported changes in pay structures include the growth in performance-related pay and profit-sharing schemes.
