Putting together a career development program
Article Abstract:
Transamerica Occidental Life Insurance Co has designed a career development program for its data processing personnel. The program consists of: workshops in career development, interpersonal skills, and management skills; career counseling on specific issues; and individualized materials for job skills and career assessment. The first step entailed identifying employees' job skills and tasks. A position summary statement was developed for each employee, and a position assessment was then composed. A pilot test of the program was conducted with 90 employees and then reviewed. The program was then introduced to all 500 data processing employees in a personalized, low-key way. Feedback for the program has been good.

Managing fluctuating workloads with temps
Article Abstract:
Temporary workers can help businesses meet the changing demand for corporate services and products. The experienced manager will calculate the right combination of temporary and experienced full-time employees. A 'core and ring' approach is suggested, in which the core consists of full-time workers and the ring consists of temporary employees who are called upon as needed. Benefits of this approach include: staffing flexibility, efficiency, cost control, and specialized assistance.
