Summer snow, cinema and the Silverdome: a cornucopia of awards ceremonies
Article Abstract:
Some organizations' innovative alternatives to the annual awards banquet are briefly discussed. The City of Fort Wayne, IN surprises certain public employees by demanding their attendance at spurious brain-storming sessions, usually occasioned by some unexpected event such as a "summer snow" that must be managed. The employees who attend these surprise meetings are then recognized for their outstanding contributions. Albert Steiger Inc of Springfield, MA schedules its awards ceremonies as company breakfasts. M-A-COM Inc of Burlington, MA videotapes its award recipients immediately prior to the ceremony. The taped employees introduce themselves and offer brief insights on their jobs. The tapes are shown at the ceremony before the employees receive their awards. Elias Brothers Restaurants Inc of Warren, MI holds its employee award ceremonies in Detroit's Pontiac Silverdome each year.

Budgeting and evaluating awards and incentives
Article Abstract:
One of the greatest challenges faced by awards and incentives planners is convincing management that allotting money to reward employees for excellent work performance would be productive and would contribute to the company's bottom line. There is usually no way of knowing how awards and incentives programs will turn out, so it is difficult to set up a budget for them and to evaluate their success. A four-step approach to budgeting is offered to help planners accomplish this difficult task. This approach involves the thorough examination of all the elements of the planned program, the assessment of the costs it would entail, the review of options, and the search for possible sources of funds. As for the evaluation of the program, it is suggested that it be assessed in terms of its effectiveness in meeting its goals, as well as the needs and expectations of the participants.

Make awards count
Article Abstract:
Recognition for work well done is an important motivating factor for many employees; some employees even rate recognition as being more important than salary. There are indications that more employers are developing employee-recognition programs, but if recognition programs are to be effective, they must be connected with clearly defined goals that most employees can accomplish. The awards and the presentation of the award should be significant and meaningful. Employee award programs at Bank of America, BayBanks, Meridian Communications, and Pacific Gas and Electric are described.
