Article Abstract:
Resume-scanning and -tracking systems facilitate the resume-handling process. These technological innovations are capable of scanning, tracking and retrieving resumes at a faster, more efficient pace. The easy access provided by resume scanning systems negates the need for outside recruiting services. Furthermore, they provide the HR department with immediate answers to resume follow-ups, providing better service for potential recruits. However, the installation of these turnkey systems cost somewhere around $30,000 to $75,000, depending on the number of users, whether it can be hooked up with an existing computer network and whether computer terminals are already available. Other variable price features include speed and imaging capability. The numerous advantages offered by a resume scanning system outweigh its costs in the long-run.

Three companies utilize a combination of high technology and the human touch to enhance efficiency of recruitment and maximize the retention of workers. Adolph Coors Co and National Semiconductor Corp use computer technology to improve the recruitment process, while NEC Technologies Inc has used bonding techniques to improve the human aspect of recruitment. To efficiently carry out a large volume of job applicants, Adolph Coors uses an applicant screening and assessment program that is fully automated. For its current personnel with job switching intentions within the company, National Semiconductor uses an automated job search program. NEC Technologies' bonding techniques allow top management active players in human resources management.

More human resources professionals are considering the potential of internal Internets, popularly called Intranets. Intranets use Internet and World Wide Web technologies inside a corporation to improve employees' ability to seek, manage, create and distribute information. They are relatively affordable and easy to maintain. Among the benefits they offer are interactivity, centralization, consistency, flexibility, a user-friendly interface and intellectual stimulation. Intranets enable early distribution of training material and ensure that users are using the most current version of posted training material. However, Intranets may need more time to mature since audio and video downloading since takes considerable time.
