Poor performance appraisals do more harm than good
Article Abstract:
Recent legal decisions have revealed the importance of establishing effective employee appraisal systems because inconsistent systems can leave companies liable for wrongful termination damages. Additionally, there are many positive aspects to establishing effective employee appraisals systems such as: improving employee morale, helping to determine and achieve company goals, and improving employee career pathing. A recent study of 92 Ohio firms by Towers, Perrin, Forster and Crosby Inc reveals, however, that 65% of respondents are not satisfied with their employee appraisal systems. To establish positive systems, firms should accurately diagnose problems and establish real appraisal systems with some of the following elements: systematic guideposts, management support, and currentness.
