The Pilkington experience
Article Abstract:
Pilkington Brothers sought to meet key communications objectives as it successfully fought off BTR PLC's recent takeover bid. Employees were to be kept aware of all publicly available bid information, the company was to be prepared to answer employee questions, quick responses were to be offered to former employees' pension questions, and open communications were to be maintained with worker representatives and the local community. A group bulletin system was effected, the local town hall was designated as a 'site' so that officials could receive news promptly, briefing groups were extended or revived, and a ten-line telephone hotline for employees was installed. Pilkington employs 14,000 in the United Kingdom, and 39,000 abroad who work in 27 locations in 15 different nations.

Equal value as a bargaining lever
Article Abstract:
Women workers in Great Britain have benefited from the enactment of the equal value amendment (to the Equal Pay Act), but the law has also affected the process of trade union negotiations. Trade unions are using the amendment as a lever in their collective bargaining activities at a time when high unemployment and recession have limited their effectiveness. The Trade Unions Congress (TUC) has had to increase the number of courses it offers to instruct members on the implications of the new regulation, and it held a special conference on the amendment in May 1986. Different unions have used the new law to varying degrees in their bargaining to date.
