The demise of the trade union as a representative body?
Article Abstract:
Trade unions across the industrial world have seen a decline in membership levels over recent years, and this has forced them to consider organisational changes. They now face a range of social, political and economic pressures, especially in the UK and the US. Some observers have been calling for alternative forms of representation. However, these would have no role in wage bargaining and would probably have little influence within the workplace.

The future of unions: is the Anglo-Saxon model a fatality, or will contrasting national trajectories persist?
Article Abstract:
Trade unions are certainly in decline in the Anglo-Saxon world, but this will not necessarily become a global trend. Unions still hold a strong position in social democratic countries, and they may have a growing role to play in newly industrialised countries. Here, they can defend social justice and prevent governments from intervening in market-oriented industrial relations.
