The loyalty factor
Article Abstract:
The concept of loyalty as conceived by both employers and employees is changing. On the part of employers, the instability of the economy and the changing business environment prevent them from making guarantees to their employees. Career employment can no longer be promised as workforce reduction becomes a common practice. On the employees' part, it has become important to place themselves ahead of their organizations partly because of the very real possibility that they can lose their jobs any time. More and more employees are questioning their company's loyalty to them. For human resources professionals conveying the company's commitment to its employees poses a challenge. Demonstrating the firm's loyalty may be done by making employees partners, providing both work-related and family-related benefits and providing opportunities for professional and personal development.

Testing is not at odds with diversity efforts
Article Abstract:
Employment tests can be useful to human resources (HR) professionals in gathering information about job applicants. Skill tests provide a fair assessment of the strengths and weakness of individuals. However, when employed outside the skill-testing arena, HR practitioners are concerned that such tests may not yield reliable information when employed with applicants from diverse backgrounds. There are fears that language, culture and other factors may influence the results of written and verbal aptitude, personality and achievement tests. To overcome these concerns, employers are advised to use job-specific tests with no between-group differences. One type of these tests is a multidimensional selection test designed to assess the examinee's attitudes toward integrity, dependability, service and other workplace behaviors.
