Against death but for profit; Bay Area has nation's only private firm focused on death-row appeals
Article Abstract:
San Francico's Sternberg, Sowards and Laurence is the only US law firm dedicated to post-conviction death penalty appeals. The caseload included two class actions: one opposing California's use of the gas chamber for capital punishment and the other death-penalty aspects of the Anti-Terrorism Act. The firm's founders met at the California Appellate Project, one of the death penalty resource centers which suffered great funding cuts in 1996. The composition of the California Supreme Court after Chief Justice Rose Bird's ouster led to a large rise in the state's death penalty affirmation rate and to death penalty appellate lawyers learning to ways to save lives.

MoFo argues against sanctions
Article Abstract:
San Francisco's Morrison and Foerster is requesting dismissal by the 9th Circuit of a sanction order against the firm in Stender v Lucky Stores Inc, a sex discrimination case against a California supermarket chain. The sanction against the firm arises from a request that Judge Marilyn Hall Patel recuse herself from the case because of errors made and undue burdens placed on the client Lucky Stores. When the firm made this request, they were sanctioned for filing a frivolous petition.

This case is close to MoFo partner's heart; he grew up hearing about 'the Troubles.' Now the lawyer is helping out an Irish escapee
Article Abstract:
Morrison and Foerster partner James J. Brosnahan, an Irish American, is engaged in a pro bono quest to keep Maze Prison escapee Kevin Barry John Artt from being extradited to Ireland. Artt escaped from the Belfast prison 13 years ago. Brosnahan contends that Artt is on a Protestant loyalist death list and would be in mortal danger if forcibly sent back to prison. Brosnahan wants the court to take judicial notice of discrimination against Catholics in Northern Ireland.
