Anatomy of a monopoly: the Harley-Davidson model
Article Abstract:
The protection granted to Harley-Davidson by the Federal Trade Commission, the courts and the Patent and Trademark Office as allowed to heavy motorcycle manufacturer to dominate its market and exclude others. Despite the fact that the company's product is technologically outdated, it has maintained control of the heavy motorcycle market by trademarking the sound its engine makes and enforcing exclusive dealing contracts on dealers. It has also tried to stop production of parts by smaller companies.

Monopoly on the left: it's okay if we can control it?
Article Abstract:
The author uses e-mail postings to argue that the members of his discussion group, predominantly teachers of economics, are generally lack belief in effective competitive economic markets. He argues that those on the political left are anti-competitive institutionalists, while those on the right favor monopolies.
