New Attorney General William P. Barr is a low-profile insider, in contrast to predecessors Edwin Meese and Richard Thornburgh. Barr has extensive government experience with the CIA, US Court of Appeals, White House and the Justice Department. He was a partner at Shaw, Pittman, Potts & Trowbridge, Washington, DC. During Senate Judiciary Committee confirmation hearings he answered questions about the Justice Department's Bank of Credit and Commerce International investigation, the Department's dealings with Inslaw Inc., and Roe v. Wade.

Reno called tough, honest; AG nominee supports diversion for nonviolent offenders, children's issues
Article Abstract:
US attorney general nominee Janet Reno has 15 years of experience as state's attorney for Dade County, FL, and has a reputation as a hands-on manager and strict prosecutor. She aims to meld a partnership among law enforcement agencies at the three levels of government. Other goals include alternative sentences for nonviolent offenders and swift prosecution and imprisonment of recidivists. Reno hopes to continue to protect children by prosecuting child abusers and nonpayers of child support.

Talking with Attorney General Janet Reno
Article Abstract:
Attorney General Janet Reno, a person unconcerned with ceremony, believes in punishing criminals but also want to try to prevent crime by providing better services to poor children at risk of growing up to a life of crime. She envisions a partnership of police, social workers and public health personnel and also wants to cooperate as much as possible with state criminal justice systems. She hopes to stay as accessible as possible in her new position.
