Bribe by any other name smells..
Article Abstract:
Bribes disguised as something more ethical have been proliferating on the local level. Homeowners profess to be interested in keeping land use and environmental law and seem willing to forget this law for large enough contributions from the developer. Ostensibly, the contribution goes into funds for civic-minded causes or to fund other battles with developers, but if homeowners are really so concerned about the flouting of land use and environmental law, they should be willing to mount a court case rather than forgetting such laws for a large enough contribution. Hypothetical examples are given.

Ol'-time religion meets new age
Article Abstract:
Environmental law has begun to reflect religious influence as well as, and sometimes in spite of, traditional constitutional considerations. Secretary of the Interior Bruce Babbitt, Vice President Al Gore, and radical turned politician Tom Hayden advocate religious values as a motivating force behind conservation and the Endangered Species Act, and a coalition of Northern CA religious figures has joined forces with environmentalists to pressure the Pacific Lumber Co into donating to the government a stand of redwood trees.

Just compensation is by no means always just
Article Abstract:
The Uniform Relocation Assistance Act pf 1970 and similar state laws allow the land owners litigation expenses along with statutory court costs when a judge determines a condemning agency cannot take the property in question. An Indiana court in Board of Commissioners v. Wygant, however, ruled the statute applied only to those rare cases where the state had tried to condemn property without a warrant, thus leaving the plaintiffs without compensation.
