Can a lawyer insist on clients of one gender?
Article Abstract:
Judith Nathanson had a strong interest in women's rights and felt this interest would be compromised by opposing a woman in a divorce suit. The Massachusetts Commission on Discrimination nevertheless sued her for refusing to represent men in such cases. Nathanson is challenging the constitutionality of a Massachusetts law which keeps lawyers from rejecting clients because of their sex without weighing the nature of their claims. She claims the statute infringes her free speech rights and contradicts bar ethical standards.

Career progress, yes; equality, not quite yet
Article Abstract:
The strides women have made in the legal profession have not nearly brought them even with men thanks to persistent myths and often unconscious discrimination. While women make up 45% of new entrants to the bar, they are only 11% of the partners at large firms and 8% of the federal bench. Women are far more likely to report gender bias in the profession and higher dissatisfaction. Women still encounter glass ceilings, stereotypes, and exclusion from vital networks, and their work is considered less valuable.

Fluttering eyes won't cut it with law clients
Article Abstract:
A conference on women attorneys at the Stanford Law School in Apr 1997 concluded that women are left in a double bind from the contradiction of feminist stereotypes with professional success. The assertiveness and competitiveness rewarded by legal cultures tend not to be the characteristics most valued by society in women. As both research by the ABA Commission on Women in the Profession and discussion at this conference reflected, expectations of working women are higher but support is lower.
