Brian McKay, the vice pres, general counsel and secretary of International Game Technology Inc, the world's largest slot-machine manufacturer and supplier of casino-style gaming equipment, headquartered in Reno, Nev., has 4 in-house attorneys in addition to himself and the help of a regulatory compliance division, a technical compliance division and two legal assistants. The department does not do much litigation but protects their intellectual property. McKay's extracurricular interest is the regulation of nuclear waste disposal, a big issue in Nevada. He chairs the state's Commission on Nuclear Projects.

Richard M Clark, the senior vice pres, general counsel and secretary of the Kellogg Co, the leading producer of ready-to-eat cereals in the world, heads a department in which the in-house lawyers cover all the substantive areas of the law and of food regulation. Clark states there is not much litigation and that it is mainly related to trademark issues. An example would be the company's current trademark infringement litigation with the Exxon Corp over the latter's use of a tiger to advertise certain food and beverage products.

Eva M Kripalani, the vice pres, general counsel and secretary of KinderCare Learning Centers Inc, the largest US provider of preschool educational and child-care services, has an in-house legal department of three attorneys including herself, with one working on new real estate and the other on litigation and state child-care licensing requirements. Kripalani, in addition to supervising the department, does corporate and policy issues and is trying to bring management towards more of a focus on compliance issues.
